Work on the District Sports Complex at Ranipet, Tirupattur is nearing completion

Work on the first district sports complex in Ranipet and Tirupattur districts is nearing completion, more than 80 per cent of the facilities, including athletics track, spectator gallery, administration block and hostels, are ready for use.
Officials of the Public Works Department (PWD), which is implementing the multi-million dollar project, said that till now the district-level sports activities were held at the playgrounds of several educational institutions in those districts.
Most pitches lack a dedicated area for training and civic amenities for athletes and visitors. “The new sports complex, which will cost ₹ 15 crore each, will have state-of-the-art facilities including an upgraded gymnasium and hostels for boys and girls. We are monitoring ongoing work on the new complex which will be ready for use in the coming months,” R. Jayakumari, District Sports Director (Tirupattur), told The Hindu.
At Tirupattur, the new sports complex, which covers more than 10 acres of temple land, will have a spectator gallery with a capacity of more than 350 people to watch football matches and athletic events. “Lack of hostels, modern sports facilities and basic amenities remains a key challenge for sportspersons, especially from rural areas. The new sports complex with hostels will be of great help to the sportspersons,” said student B. Mukesh.
The new sports facility, to be managed by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), will have separate tracks for 400 meters athletics training, two courts each for basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, tennis, kho-kho, kabaddi and football.
As part of civic amenities, the new building will have an administrative block, separate accommodation and changing rooms for athletes, washrooms, water taps, CCTV cameras and a modern gym. There is also parking for two-wheelers, cars and buses. A rainwater harvesting and rainwater drainage system is also being built.
Unlike other district sports complexes, the new facility in Tirupattur will have an open-air theater where prize distribution, coaches’ video presentations and other events can be held. The theater can accommodate around 200 people. Garden improvements and a hockey stadium will also be built.
In Ranipet, the new facility is being constructed on a spacious 16.06-acre plot of land once used by the Armed Reserves (AR) wing of the district police. Along with PWD officials, Ranipet Collector N. Priya Ravichandran inspected the ongoing sports complex in Ranipet town.
PWD officials said the remaining works in the two complexes include lighting, track strengthening, canteen for athletes in the hostels, CCTV cameras and a wall.
