NG Indira, a 63-year-old English communication coach from Kulashekharamangalam in Maravanthuruth, added a new morning routine this summer. While many seek refuge from the heat inside, she heads straight for Arivalthod, the canal that winds through her village.
At one of the ghats leading to the scenic waterway, Ms. Indira joins a few other women from the village, including a Class X student, for a paddle. In the evening, after completing the day’s work, the women return again and their oars cut the water for another round along the channel that connects the two tributaries of the Muvattupuzha River.
