A 75-year-old woman was rescued safely after her house collapsed in Ranipet’s Sholinghur town on Wednesday due to continuous rain. Revenue officials said the victim, S. Annam Ammal, lived alone in her house in Esayanur village. After continuous rain lashed the city for the past few days, the tile roof of the house collapsed on the 70-year-old man. The incident happened around 11:30 am
Neighbors immediately rescued her from the wreckage. After being tipped off, the Sholinghur police inspected the spot and admitted her to the Taluk Government Hospital in the city. Doctors at the hospital said she was stable. A case has been registered.
Similarly, the retaining wall of the hilltop Sri Yoga Anjaneya temple in Sholinghur town collapsed in the rain. The decades-old wall is about 15 feet tall. Police said no one was injured in the incident, which happened around noon. Key cities like Arakkonam, Arcot, Tiruvannamalai, Cheyyar, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ambur and Arani witnessed continuous rain on Wednesday. Many low-lying areas were flooded.
In Tirupattur, residents protested by planting saplings on potholed stretches in Kodumampalli village near Tirupattur town, decrying official apathy to realign key roads. Similarly, residents of Ozur village near Vellore’s Amirthi Zoological Park blocked the main Odugathur road to protest the non-clearance of encroachments around the lakes.
On the orders of Collector K. Tharpagaraj, the Water Resources Department (WRD) issued a flood alert in villages along the banks of the Thenpennai river as 15,000 cusecs of water was released from the Sathanur dam.
