Kuki was killed on Thursday (June 19, 2025) in the Churachandpur Manipur district, hours after the shooting was injured by Farmers Meitei.
In a statement issued late in the evening, the Police of Manipur said that Ningthhoujam Biren Singh, a cultivator of Phubal Awang Maning Leikai in the Bishhnupur district, was shot in the left arm of an unknown armed Miscreat around 15:00, while working in his unpeeled field.
He was transported to the district hospital, where he was referred to the regional institute of medical sciences in Imphal, about 30 km away. Its condition is stated that it is stable.
“In response that the security forces have launched a search operation in Langchingmanbi, Heichanglok and the western areas of the Phubal village. During the operation, the security forces came under fire unknown miscreants and retaliation forces,” the police said.
“During the cross fire, a woman from the village of Langchingmanbi was found dead with a bullet’s injury. Later she was identified as Hoikholhing Haokip, wife of Langchingman’s village,” the police said, adding that the local police transported the body to the Churachandpur district hospital.
The police said the cases were registered in connection with the incidents and an investigation was underway. “The combined security forces continue to search for operations to charge the culprits.
The villagers of Phubal killed the government for not providing the security of farmers working close to the vulnerable “equalizing zone” that separates the Imphal valley of Meitei from the surrounding hills, where Kuki-Zos are in most.
After the incident, the angry Bishhnupur blocked the highway leading to the Churachandpur and demanded an action against Kuki’s armed fighters. The female group threatened complete shutdown through the Imphal valley since Friday, unless the Supreme State Government officials visited the affected area.
Meanwhile, the female organization Kuki for Human Rights (Kwohhr) accused Mrs. Haokip’s death to Militants Meitei. Issued a statement that condemned her killing.
“Despite the presence of the government’s bumper zone designed to prevent clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities, the Militants of Meitei repeatedly violated and crossed the bumper line, caused tensions and directly threatened the lives of innocent civilians,” he said.
The organization demanded an immediate arrest and punishment of offenders of a crime, strict recovery of the bumper zone with the same responsibility on both sides, deployment of neutral central forces to ensure peace and court investigation and all recent breeding zone violations.
The PHUBALA incident was the second involvement of farmers working in the fields along the bumper zone in four days. 15th June caused the voltage of confrontation between the villages of Kuki and Meitei on the border between the districts of Imphal East and Kangpokpi.
Shooting on farmers working in the fields along the bumper zone frequent after the outbreak of the ethnic conflict between Meitei and Kuki-ZA broke out on May 3, 2023. Such incidents were not reported after Manipur fell under the rule of President 13 February.
More than 250 people of the dead left the ethnic conflict and about 60,000 others were displaced.
