An 81-year-old woman was killed and four others injured after a suspected LPG cylinder exploded at their home in KR Puram on Saturday (October 25) morning.
The impact of the explosion was so high that the house partially collapsed and cracks formed in three other houses in the neighborhood. Residents of Triveni Nagar and its surroundings were startled by the sound, which was reportedly heard up to four or five kilometers away.
The incident took place in a house owned by Ramesh, who had rented it to Shekhar and his family about nine months ago. Fifty-five-year-old Shekhar lived there with his two children — Chandana, 22, and Kiran Kumar, 24 — and his elderly mother, Akkayyamma.
Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the spot and rescued Akkayyamma from the debris, while the injured were taken to a nearby hospital. While Akkayyamma succumbs to her injuries, Chandana is critical.
According to the police, the incident took place around 7.15 am in Triveni Nagar. Akkayyamma was sleeping when the roof slab collapsed on her due to the explosion. Shekhar, Kiran Kumar and neighbor Kanchana (45) sustained injuries.
Shekhar told the police that the explosion occurred when a family member turned on the stove. Police suspect that gas leaked and accumulated in the house and caused the explosion. Fire and rescue personnel, the police and the Forensic Science Laboratory team are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the fire.
According to police, residents in and around the area initially thought the sound was made by Deepavali firecrackers.
Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje and KR Puram Constituency MLA Byrati Basavaraj visited the accident site and ensured the necessary assistance.
