Woman killed, daughter injured after scooter skids on wet road

A 42-year-old woman was killed and her 16-year-old daughter injured after the scooter they were riding skidded on the allegedly waterlogged Marathahalli-Siddapura road and was then run over by a school bus on Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified as Kantha, a warehouse manager residing in the city. Her husband is in HAL business.

According to the police, the accident took place around 7.45 am when Kantha was riding her scooter from Marathahalli towards Siddapur to drop her daughter at school. A section of the road was waterlogged after heavy overnight rain, sources said. The rider lost control of the scooter and the mother and daughter fell to the road. Before Kantha could get up, she was run over by a school bus, killing her on the spot.

Her daughter, who witnessed the incident, was traumatized. She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and counseling.

While it was claimed that Kantha fell while trying to drive on the potholed road, Bengaluru East City Corporation officials dismissed the allegation, saying the road was in good condition.

Lokhande Snehal Sudhakar, Additional Commissioner of Bengaluru East City Corporation said, “The accident site was completely pothole free and we will coordinate with the police in this matter.

Officers are examining CCTV footage from the area and taking eyewitness accounts to establish the exact sequence of events.

In another accident, a 41-year-old man died and six others were injured after a speeding mini van overturned after colliding with a two-wheeler near Indraprastha Apartments on Mysuru Road around 6.45 am.

According to the complaint filed by eyewitness Mallu, 23, a petrol station employee, the mini van was going from the RV College side towards Kengeri when the driver allegedly lost control due to over speeding.

Police said the vehicle first hit a scooter and a motorcycle traveling in front before going off the road, overturning and hitting a power pole.

Sukhdev, 41, a resident of Marathahalli and a passenger in the van, was thrown and fatally crushed when the overturned vehicle fell on him. He succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital.

Among the injured, scooter rider Pyarejan suffered serious head injuries and remains in a critical condition. Police identified the driver as Swaroop Chanda, 25, who sustained minor injuries.
