Woman hacked to death for ‘rejecting’ marriage proposal

A person was arrested on Monday for allegedly hacking a 31-year-old woman to death in Narsapuram in West Godavari district, police said.

The incident took place on Sunday when the victim, Jalem Teena Roja, refused to accept her girlfriend Margani Ramesh’s marriage proposal.

Roja, a mother of two, was married for ten years, according to police. However, due to personal disputes, she allegedly stayed away from her husband.

Ramesh, who had returned from the Gulf, proposed marriage while traveling with Roja to Sakhinetipalli in the district of Dr. BR Ambedkar Konaseema in a car driven by their mutual friend A. Suresh Babu.

Suresh Babu had earlier received Roja at Narsapuram railway station and later all three headed to Sakhinetipalli.

According to the Naraspuram police, Ramesh allegedly assaulted Roja when they stopped for tea at a roadside stall. “Ramesh attacked Roja with a knife leading to her death. Suresh Babu, also sustained injuries when he tried to prevent the attack. Roja was taken to a government hospital where she was declared brought dead,” Narsapuram Deputy Superintendent of Police M. Sudhakar said, adding that the accused fled the scene after the incident but was later nabbed.

“Ramesh, who was also injured during the attack, has been admitted to a government hospital for treatment. A case has been registered,” Mr. Sudhakar said.
