A 55-year-old woman allegedly attacked her daughter with a machete in an attempt to kill her before trying to end her life outside Harihareshwara Temple, Agrahara Layout in Sampigehalli on Wednesday.
Passers-by noticed the incident and rushed to their aid and took both the accused and the victim to hospital before alerting the police. While the accused Sarojamma is out of danger and under observation, her daughter Rekha (25) has sustained serious injuries on her neck and her condition is said to be critical.
According to the police, the incident took place around 4.30 pm when Sarojamma and Rekha reached the Harihareshwara temple. The accused allegedly attacked Rekha with a machete before striking herself.
The incident was captured on CCTV cameras and police are analyzing the footage while they await their recovery to interview them.
A probe revealed that Rekha lives with her husband Somashekar, a weaver by profession, in Anekal, while Sarojamma resides in Sampigehalli with her 80-year-old father.
Rekha is said to have often argued with her husband and returned to her mother. Both women performed special pooja to solve their marital problems. Sarojamma recently consulted an astrologer who suggested performing a special pooja.
Rekha’s husband, despite being informed about the incident, did not respond to calls, police said. The Sampigehalli police have registered a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) and further investigations are underway.
