Vidyanagar police on Friday (March 6) arrested a 48-year-old woman in connection with the death of 24-year-old Jaseela, who allegedly took her own life after being accused of theft.
Accused Ayesha, the mother of Jaseela’s boyfriend, was arrested on charges of abetting suicide. She was produced before a Kasaragod court and remanded in judicial custody. She was later shifted to the women’s jail in Kanhangad.
According to the complaint of Jaseela’s relatives, she was in severe mental distress after being accused of stealing gold.
The case has sparked protests in recent weeks, with the family of the deceased claiming that police action is being delayed.
Police have sent the mobile phones used by Jaseela and her boyfriend for forensic examination.
