The trees at the College of Applied Science (IHRD) in Kanthallur are now telling their stories with a little help from technology. As part of the artificial intelligence project ‘Vruksha Vedam’, QR codes have been installed on the trees to allow visitors to scan and access details instantly.
Principal of the college G. Sreekumar said that thanks to the project, the trees in the IHRD campus are functioning as a library. “The BSc and MSc students of the college are behind the initiative and have fixed QR codes on 80 trees as a pilot project. The QR code will be fixed for all the trees in the campus,” said Mr. Sreekumar.
Apart from tree details, visitors will also have tree-related novels, short stories and poems in Malayalam and Tamil. Scan the QR code on the sandalwood tree to get sandalwood related novels in both Tamil and Malayalam. There is also a sandal song written by a college computer science student. “AI helped render the song,” said an official.

Possibility of patenting
According to officials, the project was implemented with the support of the Munnar Wildlife Division. “The college is also exploring the possibility of getting a patent for the Vruksha Vedam project. The school campus is full of various types of trees and the new project will provide their details to students and outsiders. There are many rare trees in the campus,” the official said.
S. Indrajith, an official of the college, said that earlier students had set up a sandalwood garden on the IHRD campus. “Vruksha Vedam is another tree-related project started by the college,” he said. Devikulam MLA A. Raja inaugurated the Vruksha Vedam project on Thursday.
