In the absence of the correct system of waste disposal, the inhabitants of the village of Poompuhar in the caveripoompatinam Panchayat were forced to throw the household bins along the beach, including Poompuhar Art Gallery and near public places. Without any garbage collection service or designated dumping points, this problem escalated into the daily crisis for almost 5,000 inhabitants.
“Every morning we go looking for a place where our home waste would fit. In the end we had a choice but to leave it near the coast,” said Thendral Mathi T., resident. Other inhabitants, M. Sheel, said, “There is no one to collect waste from us and there are no garbage bins or dedicated space to dispose of. This has resulted in the beach to turn into a landfill.”
The situation concerns the importance of Poompuhara as a tourist destination. Poompuhar Art Gallery, which shows artifacts inspired by epic Silappathigarame, attracts hundreds of visitors every day – many of them also visit the nearby beach.
When the Hindus contacted an official from the Rural Development Department, he said they would look into this matter.
