With the dream of the T20 World Cup on his mind, Matthew Short has declared himself ready to bat down the order for Australia. Short made a name for himself in the Big Bash League when he opened the batting for the Adelaide Strikers and was the man of the match in the 2023-24 season.
For Australia, Short has opened the batting and is also in the middle order. During the ongoing series against India, the all-rounder was brought in to bat lower down the order. Speaking to reporters ahead of the 4th T20IShort said he was looking forward to traveling to India next year as part of the T20 World Cup squad.
“It would be massive. I missed the one in the West Indies. I was a traveling reserve. But I love playing cricket for Australia, whether it’s a World Cup or a series like this.”
“So I’m happy to take what I get, whether it’s up the order or in the middle. We’ll just wait and see and hopefully play for Australia as much as I can,” he said.
TOP FOUR, FIVE IS LOCKED
Short said he thinks his best spot is at the top of the order because he feels the top five is sealed at this point. The 29-year-old said he will use the ongoing series against India to find out where he fits in.
“Personally, I think I fit in at the top of the order. But yeah, after talking to the selectors and the coaching staff, I’m looking forward to the T20 World Cup. I know that kind of top four, top five will be pretty tight,” Short said.
“So if I were to make the XI at the World Cup, the chances are in the middle and lower order. So we’re probably using this series to see guys in different positions and we’re really looking forward to the World Cup.”
