
Online retailers in China offer bottled water taken from lakes of elite universities. They say it brings “wisdom”.
Water sold for 30 to 99 yuan ($ 4–14) to $ 500 ml is much more expensive than conventional bottled water. A regular bottle of water costs around 5 yuan ($ 0.7).
During the Chinese National University Examination (7th – 10th June) online retailers introduced bottled water marked “Weiming Lake Water” and “Campus River Water” for 99 yuan ($ 14) for 500 ml. They say it can improve brain power.
Water from Weiming Lake is sold at Beijing University. Some reports claim that the water from Lake Qinghuayuan University of Tsinghua is also sold for the same reason. Both are elite and historical institutions, often compared to Harvard and Mit. These are considered academic opponents.
Many students in luck for the exam actually bought it. But water is not for drinking. Buyers are only asked to look at it.
Some shops also sell campus land at higher prices and at the same time use the names of universities to attract buyers. According to the university’s security team, the use and sale of water is not allowed.

“Water from Weiming Lake plays a miraculous role in the help of various plants growth. Putting into your room can adjust the level of moisture,” Morning Post quoted advertising.
“Water staring can strengthen your moods every day, inspire wisdom and also dramatically increase your EQ (emotional quotient),” advertising added.
The idea became a viral on social media, with many people amused or curious.
“This water is magical! Purchase can demonstrate the level of your IQ,” came sarcastic commentary.
“Why not sell air from the university? I bet many parents buy it,” SCMP quoted another as a funny.
Universities are against sales
They both strongly opposed the sale of water from their lakes and rivers and rivers. According to universities, water is important for campus ecology and should not be sold for profit.
Experts claim that sellers have abused students’ stress and warned that such false claims can violate advertising law, according to China Daily. They recommended people to stay calm and not fall on stupid superstitions or marketing tricks.
