Wingtips of IndiGo plane, Air India plane crashes on pasture at Mumbai airport, passengers safe | Today’s news

February 3, 2026

Two passenger planes — Air India and IndiGo — suffered wing tips at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Tuesday.

The planes were carrying passengers at the time of the incident. Spokespersons for both Air India and IndiGo said all their passengers were safe.

The clash took place between Air India flight AI 2732, which was pushing back for its departure to Coimbatore, and IndiGo flight 6E 791, which taxied after arriving from Hyderabad. The extent of the damage is not yet known.

Wingtip abrasion occurs when the tip of one aircraft’s wing contacts another aircraft or the ground, often during taxiing or low-level maneuvering. Such accidents can lead to structural damage to the wing tip or aileron, requiring maintenance.

Confirming the incident, Air India said in a statement that flight AI2732 flying from Mumbai to Coimbatore on February 3 was delayed after the aircraft scheduled to operate the service came into contact with an aircraft of another airline while waiting on the taxiway before take-off.

“The wingtips of both the aircraft came into contact resulting in damage to the wingtip of our aircraft. As a precautionary measure, the aircraft was grounded for further technical checks. All passengers were safely disembarked and our ground teams are taking alternative measures to get them to their destination as soon as possible,” an Air India statement said.

The incident was reported to the regulatory authority, the statement said.

The National Civil Aviation Authority, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, said in a statement: “Both aircraft returned to the bay for inspection.” Cops from Mumbai DGCA have reached the spot and are investigating the matter.

Indigo, the country’s largest airline by market share, said in a statement that the wingtip of an aircraft operating flight 6E 791 from Hyderabad to Mumbai on February 3, 2026 came into contact with another airline’s aircraft while taxiing after landing.

“The aircraft is undergoing maintenance checks. In accordance with established protocols, the appropriate authorities were immediately notified and the matter is being investigated,” An IndiGo spokesperson said.
