Wimbledon 2026 draw: Novak Djokovic faces a tough road to the quarterfinals on Sinner’s half

The Wimbledon men’s singles draw is out and has produced some blockbusters. With two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz officially out with a wrist injury, the traditional grass-court landscape of the major has been completely reshaped. However, any notion that Alcaraz’s absence was giving Novak Djokovic a direct path to a historic 25th Grand Slam title was quickly dispelled the moment the brackets were settled.

The main development from Friday’s draw ceremony is a tough top half that has put Djokovic, now seeded seventh, in the same section as defending champion and world number one Jannik Sinner. The sensational semi-final clash between the tournament’s supreme champion and its reigning king now stands as the main projection on London’s lawns.

For the 39-year-old Djokovic, trying to equal Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon crowns will be an extremely treacherous path. While his opening match against China’s Wu Yibing looks manageable, the road to week two is full of sharp edges. The seventh-seeded Serb finds himself in a quadrant teeming with explosive grass pedigree.

He could face Stefanos Tsitsipas, now unseeded after a prolonged slump in form, in the second round before potentially facing Brazil’s Joao Fonseca in the third round. A potential quarter-final match against third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime looms, but before reaching the last eight, Djokovic must successfully dispel a lot of landmines.

On the fast, low-bouncing grasses of SW19, where one hot serving day can reverse a legacy, the seven-time champion will need to find his rhythm immediately, with little room for the slow starts that have sometimes characterized his early outings.

The path to the quarter-finals is relatively uncharted for Sinner, but he is tipped to face the mercurial Daniil Medvedev, who reached the semi-finals in London in 2023 and 2024, in the last eight.

ZVEREV LEADS THE SECOND SECTION

Meanwhile, the skin in the bottom half of the draw looks radically different. Alexander Zverev took the vacant spot left by Alcaraz and moves into second place, anchoring himself on the opposite side of the tournament. The German arrives in London with a distinct aura of invincibility, fresh from shedding his near-masculine label to capture a long-awaited maiden Grand Slam triumph on the red clay of Roland Garros.

Historically, grass has been a difficult surface for Zverev to master, as he has never advanced past the fourth round at the All England Club. However, the tactical maturity and supreme confidence created during his French Open coronation completely changes the calculus. Buoyed by a solid semi-final run in Halle during the warm-up swing on grass, Zverev leads a highly competitive bottom half that includes hard-hitting Americans Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton.

With the first balls to be played on Monday 29th June, the stage is set for a fortnight full of drama. Djokovic has his opening and without Alcaraz the monumental hurdle is gone, but with Sinner sharing his backyard and a confident Zverev waiting in the wings, the road to tennis immortality has rarely looked more challenging.
