Former New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee has shared insights into the future of Kane Williamson, one of the nation’s most celebrated cricketers.
Tim Southee on Kane Williamson’s Future
Despite Williamson’s continued importance across all three formats for New Zealand, Southee acknowledged that time will ultimately determine how long he remains at the top. While Williamson remains committed to international cricket, the growing workload and physical demands have sparked discussions about his longevity. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Southee expressed confidence that New Zealand Cricket will manage his schedule meticulously to keep him fresh and ready for the ODI World Cup 2027.
“For him (Williamson), he’s still playing all three formats. He’s also secured a county contract in the UK for the winter, which shows his hunger to play. Time will tell, but with the One-Day World Cup two years away, I think New Zealand Cricket will do everything they can to keep him fresh and available. He’s still relatively young at 34, but you never quite know with Kane,” Southee said.
Williamson’s Champions Trophy 2025 Performance and ODI Legacy
Despite recent injury struggles, Williamson once again demonstrated his class during the Champions Trophy 2025, leading New Zealand to another ICC final. The elegant right-hander scored 189 runs at an average of 47.25 and a strike rate of 85.91, reaffirming his consistency on the big stage. Since his ODI debut in 2010, Williamson has been New Zealand’s leading run-scorer in the format, playing pivotal roles in multiple ICC tournaments. However, injuries have often sidelined him, raising questions about his future. With the next ICC ODI event in 2027, many speculate whether Williamson will extend his ODI career until then or step away earlier.

Williamson Goes Unsold in IPL 2025 Mega Auction
One of the biggest shocks of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction was Kane Williamson going unsold, marking a turning point in his T20 career. Despite his vast experience and leadership skills, no IPL franchise bid for him, raising questions about his future in the league.
Previously with the Gujarat Titans (GT), Williamson was released ahead of the auction. His absence highlights the evolving dynamics of franchise cricket, where younger, more aggressive T20 players are often preferred over experienced anchors like Williamson.
While Williamson remains active in international cricket, he has also begun exploring opportunities in franchise and county cricket. Recently, he signed a two-year contract with Middlesex Cricket, committing to both the T20 Blast and the County Championship. Additionally, he will feature for Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). These moves suggest that while he remains focused on international cricket, he is also preparing for a post-international career in global T20 leagues.
