In an extensive conversation about No NO Priors with risk capitalist Sarah Guo, CEO Duolingo Luis von Ahn painted a bold picture of how artificial intelligence could dramatically transform global education.
“Education will change. It’s a much more scalable to learn with AI than with teachers,” Von AHN quoted in a Business Insider podcast.
While the recognition that schools will continue to exist, von AHN claimed that their primary purpose could move from teaching to children’s care and supervision. “That doesn’t mean teachers will leave,” he explained. You still need people to take care of students. Also, I do not think that schools will leave because you still need care for children, ”Luis von Ahn quoted.
The force of AI consists of personalization
Von AHN emphasized the limitation of current class models, where one teacher often tries to adapt teaching for 30 or more students. In contrast, AI can adapt the content in real time. “The computer can know exactly what you are good and bad – something that the teacher simply cannot watch for 30 students at the same time,” he explained.
He imagined the future where classrooms full of “Duolingo-Ing” students through adapted lessons, while teachers take over more facilitator or mentor roles.
Barriers Transformation remain
Despite his optimism, von Ahn acknowledged that the way to education controlled AI will not be fast or easy. “Education is slowly changing,” he said, quoting government regulation, outdated systems and cultural standards as the main obstacles. However, they see massive potential, especially in countries that urgently need a scalable and cost -effective educational solution.
Re -evaluation of the future of learning
Von Ahna comments raise wider questions about the role of educators, classrooms and ethics that they rely heavily on AI to shape the young mind. While the idea of AI as a primary instructor today may seem radical, von AHN believes it is only a matter of time. “It may take years,” he said.
