On September 2, 2026, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar H. Samuels unveiled sweeping restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence and screen time in the city’s public schools. As part of the policy, student AI tools are now blocked for students in kindergarten through eighth grade for a year. The new policy will affect more than 600,000 students at one of the largest public schools in the US
