"Why Can’t You Repair Bengaluru?" Mohandas Pai Slams Karnataka Dy CM for Big Projects but "Deteriorating" City Administration
Bengaluru, the once junction of opportunities, is now struggling with perpetual traffic congestion, poor infrastructure, and an ailing city administration. The woes of this metropolis have not only dampened the spirits of its residents but also concerned the business leaders, who have been at the helm of development in the city. One such voice of concern is Mohandas Pai, Chairman of Manipal Global Education, who has come down heavily on the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, over the state’s inability to resolve the pressing issues plaguing the city.
Pai, a renowned entrepreneur and business leader, expressed his frustration at the recent launch of several big-ticket projects in the city, which he deemed largely public relations exercises, while the fundamental issues of the city’s administration remain unresolved. He stated, "The city is facing a crisis, and this is not just about big projects; it’s about the day-to-day governance. The city’s infrastructure is crumbling, and this is not just about fixing roads, but also about creating a conducive environment for business and entrepreneurship to thrive."
Pai accused the city administration of being unable to manage the basic services, such as waste management, transportation, and healthcare, effectively, even as it continues to splurge on "public relations projects". He lamented, "For instance, the civic chaos on Brigade Road is a classic example. Instead of addressing the issue, the administration is bent on launching a new project, the ‘Smart City Project’. What’s the point of having a smart city if the existing infrastructure is not efficient?"
The deteriorating condition of the city, according to Pai, is not just a matter of governance but also a reflection of the city’s inability to invest in its future. The city, which was once a hub for entrepreneurship and innovation, is now struggling to provide basic amenities to its residents. The sorties of commuters, the stench of garbage-filled roads, and the inadequate healthcare facilities are stark reminders of the city’s neglect.
The business leader did, however, laud the efforts of the city’s entrepreneurs,, who, despite the challenges, are still willing to invest in the city. "Bengaluru is still a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, and we must support these entrepreneurs with better infrastructure and services to ensure they can grow and thrive," he added.
Mohandas Pai’s outspoken criticism of the city’s administration has sparked a debate on social media, with many residents and entrepreneurs echoing his sentiments. It is clear that the city’s woes run far deeper than just big-ticket projects, and a fundamental overhaul of the city administration is required to bring about a lasting change.
For Bengaluru to regain its erstwhile glory, the city administration must prioritize the well-being of its residents by addressing the pressing issues of infrastructure, governance, and public services. It is only by doing so that the city can attract investment, foster innovation, and provide a better quality of life to its citizens. As Mohandas Pai emphasized, "The question is not about splurging on big projects; it’s about repairing the city’s fundamentals, so that we can build a better Bengaluru, for all of us."
