How much will Team India Women win if they are to lift the ICC Women’s World Cup on Sunday? (Images via Getty Images) The Indian women’s cricket team is one win away from rewriting history when they take on South Africa in the final of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup at the DY Patil Stadium on Sunday. The BCCI is understood to be lining up a record cash reward for Harmanpreet Kaur and her team if they lift the trophy in line with the board’s commitment to equal pay.
BCCI secretary Saikia explains how Jay Shah championed women’s cricket
“BCCI supports equal remuneration for men and women, hence there is a lot of discussion that if our girls win the World Cup, the remuneration will not be any less compared to men’s global triumph. But it is not nice to announce it before they win the cup,” an anonymous BCCI source told PTI. It was learned that the BCCI was considering an amount similar to that received by the men’s team after winning the T20 World Cup in 2024. On that occasion, the Rohit Sharma-led side along with the support staff were awarded ₹125 crore for their title win in the final against South Africa. Likewise, the women’s team could be in line for one of the biggest cash prizes in the history of Indian women’s sports. The discussion is said to be based on the principle of ‘equal remuneration’ introduced by then BCCI secretary and now ICC chairman Jay Shah. This policy ensured that Indian women cricketers received match fees equal to their male counterparts. In 2017, when India narrowly lost the World Cup final to England at Lord’s by nine runs, each player was awarded ₹50,000, while head coach Tushar Arothe and support staff were also felicitated for their efforts. Eight years later, the stakes are much higher, on and off the field.
