
The Palestinian militant group Hamas confirmed the death of the military chief of Gaza Mohammad Sinwara on Saturday. This comes a few months after Israel said he was killed in May on a strike.
Hamas did not provide details about Sinware’s death, but published his pictures along with other group leaders and described them as “martyrs”, Reuters said.
Who was Mohammed Sinwar?
Mohammad Sinwar, 49, was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the head of the Islamic faction who, with the co -ownership of October 7, 2023, and who was killed by Israel a year later.
After his brother’s death, he was promoted to the highest ranks of the group.
The siblings were reportedly born – and later killed – in the Khan Yunis area in Gaza.
Mohammed was part of the 2011 meeting, when Yahya released as one of the 1,027 Palestinian terrorists in exchange for captured Israeli Gilad Shit.
At some point in its terrorist history, Mohammed Sinwar was nicknamed the Israeli intelligence service “Shadow” because it was so elusive, the press agency reported. He even skipped his father’s funeral to avoid the authorities.

“The body of the IDF and Shin Bet) said that the common statement of IDF and Shin Bet (ISA) was found:“ The body of Mohammad Sinwara, the head of the Military Wing of the terrorist organization Hamas, is located.
“In the targeted operation of IDF and SHIN Bet forces at the southern command and after completion of the identification process, it was confirmed that the body of Mohammad Sinwara was found on the underground route under the European Hospital in Khan Yunis,” the statement read.
Sinwar was eliminated together with the Rafah brigade commander Mohammad Shabaneh in the joint operation of IDF and Shin Bet on 13 May 2025, while they were inside the underground command and a control complex currently operating the IdF forces.
“During the search on the underground route, items belonging to Sinwar and Shabaneh, along with other news materials that were transferred to further investigation, were found,” the Israeli army said.
“Other terrorist bodies were also discovered during the operation; their identity is examined,” he added.
