
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the loss of the icon Kathak Kumudini Lakhia on Saturday and called it as an excellent cultural icon. PM Modi said that her passion towards Kathak and Indian classic dances was reflected in her “remarkable work over the years”.
The Prime Minister also called her a “real pioneer”, adding that she “raised” generations of dancers. Her contributions will continue to weigh, he said.

President Droucadi Murmu also agreed to lose the Padma Shri award and said that Kumundini Lakhia “transformed” the way Kathak dance is introduced.

The Minister of the Union Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also took X to mourn the death of Kumudini Lakhia.

Who is Kokhia?
Kumudini Lakhia died at the age of 95 on Saturday in Ahmedabad. At the beginning of this year, Padma Vibhushan was awarded on the day of the Republic.
The Kathak icon was previously awarded Padma Shri in 1987 and Padma Bhushan in 2010, along with several other prestigious honors during her famous career.
Kumudini Lakhia was born in 1930, a pioneer in the current dancing of Kathak.
At the age of 7, Kathak started training, but Kathak Kumudini Lahia’s career began with Ram Gopal as he traveled in the West and pointed to world attention to Indian dance forms. Maestros from Jaipur Gharan and Pandit Shambh Mahara was trained and has evolved as a seasoned dancer and choreography over time.
After Lakhia was released in 1967 for two decades, she founded the Kadamb Center for Dance in Ahmedabad. In 1973 it was involved in a full -time choreography.
Kumudini Lakhia is known for its choreographies including several people, unlike the traditional Kathak dance, where it is usually a solo performance. Her most famous choreography include Dhabkar (Pulse), Yugal (The Duet) and Atah Kim (Where now?)
