
114-year-old veteran Marathon Runner Fauja Singh dies in a traffic accident in Jalandhar Fauuja Singh, the world’s oldest marathon runner and the British athlete of Indian origin Sikh, died at the age of 114 years after being hit by car in his native village in Pandjábu 14 July. He was hit by a fast vehicle as he walked in front of his home in Beas Village. When walking on the Berm from the highway Jalandhar-Pathankot, he was hit by an unidentified vehicle around 15:30, his son Harbinder Singh said. The family took him to a nearby hospital, but died around 20:00. Born 1 April 1911 in Beas Pind, Jalandhar, Pandjab, Singh overcame early physical challenges and could not walk until the age of five because of weak feet. He worked as a farmer in Pandjab before moving to East London in 1992 after his wife’s death.

Singh’s remarkable running journey began in 1994 after the death of his fifth son Kuldip. Initially, he married jogging to handle his grief, but until 2000, at the age of 89, seriously persecuted running and finished the London marathon in 6 hours and 54 minutes.In 2011, at the age of 100, Singh achieved extraordinary performance by breaking eight world age records in a single day in Ontario Masters Association Fauja Singh Invitational Meet in Toronto. Its records included 100 m completion for 23.14 seconds, 200 m for 52.23 seconds and 400 m at 2: 13.48.Three days after setting up these records, Singh became the first groin to complete the marathon, completed the waterfront in Toronto in 8 hours, 11 minutes and 6 seconds. Despite this success, the Guinness World Records did not recognize performance due to the absence of a birth certificate because the official records were not maintained in India in 1911.During his running career, Singh took part in many marathons around the world, including events in London, New York, Toronto and Mumbai. His personal best came to 2003 Toronto Waterfront Marathon, who finished in five hours and 40 minutes in the category “over 90”.

Singh’s achievements exceeded running records. In 2003 he became the first non -American to receive the Honorary Medal Ellis Island for the support of racial tolerance. In 2011 he won the title Pride of India and appeared in advertising campaigns along with David Beckham and Muhammad Alim.On July 7, 2011, a biography called “Turbaned Tornado” was published by a publicist based in Chandigarh Khushwant Singh. In 2021, a biopic called “Fauja”, directed by Omung Kumar B, was declared.Singh left a competitive run at the age of 101 after the completion of his last race, 10 km of running in Hong Kong, 1 hour 32 minutes and 28 seconds. He worked as a torch for the London Olympics in 2012 and received recognition from Queen Elizabeth II, who personally congratulated him on his 100th birthday.During his running career, Singh was supported by his personal coach Harminder Singh and with his platform he received funds for various charity organizations and at the same time promoted Sikh culture around the world. The vegetarian was also the oldest person who appeared in the PETA campaign.
