Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead in his office at Agartala police headquarters on Monday. According to reports, a senior IPS officer allegedly committed suicide.

Who was Anurag Dhankar?

Dhankar was a 1994 batch IPS officer who served in the Tripura Police for over three decades. In May 2025, he took over as the Director General of Police, Tripura. Dhankar previously served as the state’s director of intelligence.

He also served in the CBI, BSF, CISF and UN peacekeeping forces in Kosovo.

During his tenure at the CBI, Dhankar led the agency’s investigation into the Punjab National Bank fraud, which implicated Nirav Modi.

Dhankar has also held several key positions in the CBI, including Superintendent of Police, Deputy Inspector General, Joint Director and Additional Director. He also served in the Central Industrial Security Corps (CISF) as Inspector General (Personnel).

He also held the role of Chairman of the Special Investigation Team into the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
