Bhutanese spinner Sonam Yeshey etched his name in the history books by becoming the first bowler to take eight wickets in T20 cricket. Yeshey produced a remarkable performance in the third T20I against Myanmar at Gelephu Mindfulness City.
He registered excellent figures of 8/7 from his four overs to bundle out the opposition for just 45 in reply to Bhutan’s 127 for 9. The result saw the 22-year-old become the first player to take eight wickets in T20 history and etch his name in golden letters in the folklore of the game.
Yeshey was brought into the attack in the third over of the innings and made an immediate impact, scalping the wicket with his very first delivery by cleaning up Phyo Wai. He further dismissed KK Lin Thu and Lin Aung in the same over and did not concede a single run. Bhutan Cricket Post (Source: @BhutanCricket)
He went on to dismiss Khin Aye in his second match, conceding just three runs. Yeshey then added two more wickets to his tally in his third game before finally scalping two more wickets in his final over to complete a sensational eight-wicket haul.
Only two bowlers have previously taken seven wickets in men’s T20 internationals, namely Syazrul Idrus (7 for 8 for Malaysia v China in 2023) and Ali Dawood (7 for 19 for Bahrain v Bhutan in 2025). In T20 cricket overall, he has achieved this feat only twice, Colin Ackermann (7-18 for Leicestershire against Birmingham Bears in 2019) and Taskin Ahmed (7-19 for Durbar Rajshahi against Dhaka Capitals in 2025).
Meanwhile, the best bowling figures in women’s T20Is and in T20 cricket overall are 7/0 by Indonesia’s Rohmalia against Mongolia in 2024. Four more players have taken seven wickets in women’s T20Is, namely Frederique Overdijk (7 against France against France and 7 against Alison Stock Netherlands) Samanthi Dunukedeniya (7 for 15 for Cyprus against Czech Republic).
However, Yeshey has now surpassed them all with his unprecedented eight-wicket haul. He made his T20I debut in July 2022 against Malaysia and made an instant impression with figures of 3 for 16. He has taken 37 wickets in 34 T20Is so far in his career.
