IAS officer Sanjeev Khirwar, a 1994-batch AGMUT cadre IAS officer, has been appointed as the new Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi by the Union Home Ministry.
The appointment was announced through an official order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and communicated to the office of the Governor of Delhi.
Khirwar takes charge as the civic body prepares to present its budget before the City Hall later this month and tackles key administrative and financial issues.
The Commissioner plays a central role in overseeing the day-to-day functions of the corporation, implementing policies and coordinating with various departments.
Who is Sanjeev Khirwar?
Sanjeev Khirwar is an IAS officer in the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre who came into the limelight after a dog-walking altercation.
In May 2022, when Khirwar was serving as Delhi’s Principal Secretary (Revenue), he reportedly vacated the Thyagraj Stadium complex and closed it early in the evening for the training of athletes and coaches so he could “walk the dog” with his wife.
Refuting the allegations, Ajit Chaudhary, administrator of Thyagraj, said that the official time for athletes to practice is before 7 pm. Khirwar also dismissed the allegations, terming them as “absolutely incorrect”.
However, the athletes claimed that they used to practice till 8.30 pm, but because of Khirwar, they were forced to end their practice at 7 pm.
He was transferred to Ladakh from Delhi.
From 2009 to 2014, Sanjeev Khirwar served as Private Secretary to the Union Minister for Women and Child Development.
After an argument in 2022, his wife Rinku Dugga, also a 1994 batch IAS officer, was transferred to Arunachal Pradesh. She served as Principal Secretary of the Indigenous Affairs Department there.
Rinku, according to a Times of India report, has been given compulsory retirement in September 2023.
