Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner with 97.66% of the vote amid violent clashes in the East African country.
The election was held on Wednesday. The Tanzanian president was widely expected to secure an easy victory in the polls as results from 120 of the country’s 272 constituencies already showed the country’s first female leader leading with around 97% of the vote, according to several news agency reports.
Who is Samia Suluhu Hussain?
Samia Suluhu Hussain took power as Tanzania’s president in 2021 after her predecessor John Magufuli died in office – to run the East African country of 68 million people.
Hussain was the vice president then. The term of office of the President of Tanzania is five years.
State television said Samia Suluhu Hussain’s swearing-in ceremony will take place today, Saturday.
The re-election of Tanzania’s president comes after violent clashes rocked the nation.
Despite a heavy security presence, election day spiraled into chaos as crowds took to the streets across the East African nation to tear down posters of Samia Suluhu Hussain – attacking police and polling stations – prompting authorities to shut down the internet and impose curfews.
