Cameroon 2025 election results: At the age of 92, Paul Biya, the world’s oldest president, has won elections in Cameroon again, the country’s highest court said on Monday. Biya’s victory comes after days of clashes between protesters and security forces – which left at least four dead as opposition supporters demanded credible results.
According to an Associated Press report, the Constitutional Council said Biya won 53.66% of the vote, while Issa’s former ally Tchiroma Bakary won 35.19%. Voter turnout in Cameroon this year was 57.7%.
Biya is set to serve an eighth consecutive term.
Who is Paul Biya?
Paul Biya first took power in 1982 after the resignation of Cameroon’s first president and has remained in office ever since – later benefiting from a constitutional amendment that removed term limits.
The newly re-elected leader has now ruled longer than most Cameroonians have been alive. More than 70 percent of the country’s nearly 30 million people are under the age of 35, and the Oct. 12 election highlighted a growing divide between Africa’s youthful population and its long-entrenched leaders, an AFP report said.
Cameroon has been tense in recent weeks ahead of the presidential election results. Several netizens also took to social media platforms to post videos of clashes in the country.
On Sunday, four people were killed in clashes between security forces and opposition supporters in Douala, the country’s economic hub.
What is happening in Cameroon?
In a social media post after the announcement of the Cameroon poll results, Biya’s rival Tchiroma claimed that security forces had fired on civilians, killing two in his hometown of Garoua.
“Shooting right at your own brothers – can’t help but wonder if you guys are mercenaries,” he wrote. “Kill me if you want, but I will liberate this land by any means necessary. What shameless impunity.”
Biya’s decision to seek another mandate has reportedly angered the youth and the opposition, who have accused him of complicity in the disqualification of his strongest rival and using the “state machinery” to rig the election.
Cameroon presidential election
Cameroonian President Paul Biya’s re-victory means he can now rule until 2032. According to a report by Al Jazeera, opposition supporters said the October 12 election was “stolen”.
