Who is Nagma Mohamed Mallick? Ambassador of India to Japan, now accredited also as Ambassador to the Marshall Islands | Today’s news

Nagma Mohamed Mallick, a 1991-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, currently India’s ambassador to Japan, has been concurrently accredited as the next ambassador of India to the Republic of the Marshall Islands, residing in Tokyo, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Monday.

Nagma Mohamed Mallick is expected to take up the assignment soon, the ministry said in a statement. The Marshall Islands are an island nation in the central Pacific Ocean located in the Micronesia region about halfway between Hawaii and Australia.

Nagma Mohamed Mallick joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1991. Mallick holds a B.Sc English literature and a master’s degree in sociology. Mallick speaks English, French, Hindi, Urdu and Malayalam, according to her profile on the official website.

India’s first woman Deputy Chief of Protocol

Nagma Mohamed Mallick started her diplomatic career incl Pariswhere she served at the Indian Embassy and the Indian Mission to UNESCO.

Nagma Mohamed Mallick also served in New Delhi in various capacities of the Government of India, starting as an officer in the Western Europe Division of the Ministry of External Affairs and then as Prime Minister IK Gujral’s personal staff in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Mallick also served as the first woman Deputy Chief of Protocol (Ceremonial) after her stint in the PMO from 1997 to 1998. She then served in Indian diplomatic missions in Nepal and Sri Lanka as First Secretary and Counsellor.

She was too Deputy spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Delhi. In addition, she was the then Director in the Eurasia Division, overseeing India’s bilateral relations with Russia and the CIS countries. From July 2010 to September 2012, she worked as the Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy in Thailand.

Nagma Mohamed Mallick was the Ambassador of India to the Republic of Tunisia from October 2012 to November 2015. From December 2015 to December 2018, she served as the Indian High Commissioner for Brunei Darussalam.

Education

Born in New Delhi to Keralite parents from Kasaragod, Mallick studied at St. Stephen’s College and Delhi School of Economics before cracking the civil services exam.

Mallick was the Department’s Head of Policy Planning from February 2019 to January 2020 and then Additional Secretary (Africa) until August 2021 as Head of Relations with East and Southern African Nations with oversight responsibilities for relations with all of Africa.

Mallick was Ambassador of India to the Republic of Poland from September 2021 before being assigned to Japan in October last year.
