The University of Pennsylvania agreed to block Transgender’s athletes in their female sports teams, the US government said on Tuesday 1 July. The announcement came when the parties dealt with the federal case of civil rights resulting from the discussion of Lia Thomas swimmers.
On Tuesday, the US Ministry of Education stated that it has concluded an agreement on a resolution that promises to adhere to the head IX, a federal law that prohibits discrimination against sex in any educational program.
The decision follows the investigation of the Office of the Ministry for Civil Rights, which found that the university violates the head IX by allowing Transgender swimmers Thomas to compete in women’s competitions in 2021-2022.
Who is Lia Thomas?
Lia Thomas became the first openly transgender swimmer the title of division I (female 500 Yards Freestyle) and has been criticized by President Donald Trump and Republicans in the last few years.
Austin, Texas native, Thomas graduated from high school in 2017. Initially, she was part of the swimming and diving of Penn Men, where she got to the three finals of swimming and diving Ivy League in 2018. These include 500 yards, 1000 and 1650 freestyle events.
The swimmer launched hormone substitution therapy in 2019 and eventually came out as a transgender to his coaches and members of the team of male and female teams.
In 2021 Thomas returned to sport and this time joined the swimming and diving team Penn Women, where she was in the center of attention after his performance at Zippy Invitational event.
When she continued to participate on behalf of the Women’s Team, the NCAA Governor Council agreed to carry out the “sports sport approach” in January 2022 to participate in Transgender athletes since 2022-23 of the academic year.
While Thomas said her team supported her participation, 16 Penn Swarmers complained that she was taking “competing opportunities” in the events including “competing opportunities”, including the Iva League championship.
Thomas, however, won three titles Ivy League Championship, which allowed her to qualify for swimming and diving NCAA I Division I, where she won one title. Penn also nominated her for NCAA Woman of the Year.
After graduation, Thomas abstained from participating in swimming meetings and focused on obtaining a legal title. During this time, in March 2023, the World Athletic Council announced that it forbids the translass.
What is controversy?
Lia Thomas became a flash around the debate on Transgender’s athletes in women’s sport after he competed in women’s collegial competitions in 2022.
Her participation in women’s events caused extensive outrage, and critics and some fellow citizens said they should not be allowed to compete for an unfair physiological advantage. Her supporters claimed that she should be allowed to compete as a woman.
Trump issued a executive order in February aimed at banning a transgender athlete, allowing federal agencies to stop funding any institution that does not consider sex assigned to birth when determining sex.
Depending on the settlement conditions, all individual records of swimming and titles will restore to female athletes affected by Thomas.
