
The British authorities identified a suspect in a deadly attack on the synagogue in Manchester as 35-year-old jihad al-Shamie. He is a British citizen of Syrian origin.
Al-Shamie reportedly an attack before the Hebrew Synagogue Hebrew Hebregation Synagogue in North Manchester at Yom Kippur, the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar. Witnesses said he was driving a car to pedestrians before he got off and started stinging, killed two people and seriously injured four more. The police said both deaths were Jewish.
Response
The larger police in Manchester confirmed that Al-Shamie was shot and killed by officers outside the synagogue. The authorities initially delayed the confirmation of his death because he was wearing a vest that looked like an explosive device. The police later confirmed that it was carrying a bomb.
Arrest
The police arrested three more individuals for suspected crimes related to terrorism. These include two men at the age of 30 and one woman at the age of 60, who are investigated for a possible involvement in the attack.
A public and political reaction
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned Al-Shamie as “a disgusting attacker who attacked the Jews because they were Jews” and promised a stronger police presence in synagogues across the country.
