(AP photo) History was made at the Estadio Azteca on the opening night of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and it wasn’t just because Mexico beat South Africa 2-0.Seventeen-year-old Gilberto Mora announced himself to the world, becoming the youngest Mexican ever to play in the FIFA World Cup and only the sixth youngest player in the tournament’s history.The teenager entered the bout in the 65th minute to a rousing reception from a packed Mexico City crowd that included boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez. At 17 years and 240 days, Mora broke the record that had stood since the inaugural World Cup in 1930.He surpassed Manuel “Chaquetas” Rosas, who was 18 years and 134 days old when he represented Mexico against France 96 years ago.Only Pele (17 years and 235 days), Salomon Olembe (17 years and 185 days), Femi Opabunmi (17 years and 101 days), Samuel Eto’o (17 years and 99 days) and Norman Whiteside of Northern Ireland (17 years and 41 days) were younger on their World Cup debut.
Who is Gilberto Mora?
Born in Tuxtla Gutierrez, southern Mexico on October 14, 2008, Mora came through the youth ranks at Club Tijuana and made his Liga MX debut shortly before turning 16.An attacking midfielder gifted with exceptional game intelligence, creativity and composure under pressure, Mora has quickly established himself as one of the brightest prospects in Mexican football. He has already played more than 50 senior games for Tijuana, despite still being only 17.His performances at the 2025 U20 World Cup in Chile helped Mexico reach the quarter-finals and further enhanced his reputation.
Record rise with El Tri
The ascent to the Sea was breathtaking.Earlier in 2025, head coach Javier Aguirre handed him his senior international debut against Saudi Arabia in the quarter-finals of the Gold Cup, making him the youngest player ever to represent the Mexican national team.He later provided the assist for Raul Jimenez in the semi-final against Honduras as Mexico lifted the trophy.Now the teenager has added another remarkable chapter to his growing story.Mora is also the youngest player at the 2026 World Cup and could become only the second-youngest goalscorer in the tournament’s history if he finds the net in Mexico’s remaining matches.
