US Army Chief of Staff Randy George was fired Thursday by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who ordered the general’s immediate retirement as the war with Iran dragged into its fifth week.
“General Randy A. George will retire effective immediately as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army. The Department of War is grateful for General George’s decades of service to our nation. We wish him well in his retirement,” the War Department said in a statement, without giving reasons for the general’s departure.
Reuters reported that there had been no previous signs of friction between George and Hegseth, despite his somewhat unorthodox actions such as firing the army’s top lawyer. The army also held a massive military parade to mark its 250th birthday, which happened to coincide with US President Donald Trump’s birthday.

But earlier this week, Hegseth reversed the military’s decision to investigate Army pilots who flew Apache attack helicopters near the home of singer Kid Rock, a vocal Trump supporter.
However, CBS News, which first reported George’s firing, said the general’s dismissal was unrelated to the Kid Rock incident.

Who is General Randy George?
Born and raised in Iowa, Randy George enlisted in the US Army in 1982 and began attending the US Military Academy at West Point in 1984.
During his military career, George served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, including a deployment with the 101st Airborne Division during Operation Desert Storm. George also commanded the 4th Brigade Combat Team during the war in Afghanistan.

George was considered close to Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, with the two working together to take on the defense giants in the military’s drive to speed up weapons development and cut costs.
George was confirmed as head of the U.S. military in 2023: a term in that role typically lasts four years, and the general’s dismissal on Thursday cut his term by about a year and a half.

Who will replace Randy George?
US Army Vice Chief of Staff General Christopher LaNeve is reportedly set to take over from George.
LaNeve was named deputy chief of staff in February of this year and previously served as Hegseth’s top military assistant from 2025 to 2026.
A graduate of the Arizona Army Reserve Officer Training Corps, LaNeve, like George, served in both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and was also the commanding general of the famed 82nd Airborne Division from 2022 to 2023.
The US-Israel war with Iran drags on
George’s firing comes as the US military conducts operations against Iran, with the war entering its fifth week.
Despite Trump’s claims of negotiations with Tehran, fighting continues in the Middle East and the effective closure of the key Strait of Hormuz is driving up energy prices.
Although the U.S. Navy and Air Force largely conduct strikes in the region, troops have been deployed to the Middle East to support air defense systems. The Army is the largest branch of the US military with about 450,000 active duty soldiers.
