At the age of only 16 years, the American Grand Master Abhimanyu Misra released one of the most amazing performances from 2025 Fide Grand Swiss and overthrew the ruling world champion Gukesh Dommaraju in a breathtaking conflict of 5. A record that has been worth more than three decades.
Misra, born on February 5, 2009 in Long Branch, New Jersey, for the first time invaded the chess scene by winning the title of Grand Master in 2021 in just 12 years, four months and 25 days – joined the youngest. Misra, who was introduced into the game of his father at the age of only two and a half years, has since increased in ranks with tireless discipline.
On September 8, 2025 Misra faced Gukesh in the fifth round of the Samarkand tournament. In the strategic accuracy championship class, he won in an exhausting battle of 61 movement. Triumph amazed the chess world and broke the previous record of the youngest player who defeated the ruling champion, which has been held since the early 90s. He also emphasized Misra’s rapid ascent from the amazing talent to a real candidate about the global scene.
In addition to his victory over Gukesh, Mishhra had previously held the highest seed, Indian Grand Master R Pragggnanandhaa, for a durable draw with black pieces. The results of the dramatic round 5 included a double obstacle to the best Indian hopes, while Pragggnanandhaa dropped to Matthias Bull and Misra stunning gukesh in rapid succession.
As Misra was thinking about his remarkable victory, he spoke to humility, yet trust and said he had never felt lower than his high -ranking opponents, and that if he continued this form, “I have a very real chance of winning the tournament.”
“I played it two years ago and got a very combat draw with black. I went into the game that I thought I was a huge loser. Yesterday I also took Pragg with black. I felt I could play good movements. I thought I was on the same level.
Misra is now among the leaders of the four -point tournament, just half a point behind the only leader, Iranian Parham Maghsoodloom.
