American tennis great, John McEnroe, emphasized how sport needs one more star to compete with the towering modern stars in Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to create a “big-the” next generation.
The term is to identify the trio of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovich, who ruled sports for about two decades. When Federer and Nadal retired and Djokovic had already gone to a descending spiral in their form, Sport saw Alcaraz and Sinner appear as the two best players in the men’s division.
Alcaraz has already dominated, with two consecutive titles Wimbledon and the French Open in 2022 in 2022. Similarly, Sinner also does his brand, with the Australian Open and the US Open titles by his name.
When Wimbledon launched 30 June later this month, both men will be considered popular to take the title of male singles. But the question remains: Does anyone need to compete with these two in court?
“It will be interesting to find out whether there is another player or two who can break up with these two, as Novak (Djokovic) did when he tried to get to the same level as Roger (Federer) and Rafa (Nadal),” McEnroe quoted.
Recent FRENCH OPEN Final was a testimony The way he fought the rivalry between the two best stars. Although Alcaraz was two sets, saved three points of matches and organized a stunning comeback to win a competition that showed up as the longest finals in the history of the French Open.
“He shows you what type of player he was, that he did it. But right now there is an emptiness,” he added.
Who can compete with Alcaraz-Sinner Dominance?
As for who can compete these two, McEnroe mentioned some younger stars in Jakub Mensik (19), Joo Fonseca (18) and Ben Shelton (22) as his selections.
“One of these two people or Ben would be my choice now,” McEnroe said.
“I think it would be important to get another or two to join the mix. That would be really useful,” he added.
Shelton is probably between familiar faces, given that it is placed on 10. His most important act came to the Australian Open semifinals in 2025.
Mensik is still heading to the highest levels, but at the beginning of this year in Open in direct sets, one victory over Djokovic in Miami Open has already won. It’s not every day when the Serbian legend is withdrawing like this, and it could be the forerunner of what can be expected later in his career.
Fonseca had his moment to increase when he took off Andrey Rublev in a direct victory at the Australian Open, his first main debut. Since then, he has not intervened these levels, but it seems that it is on the way to get into the big league consistently.
“It was unheard of what we have watched in the last 20 years, and you can argue that what we see now is even faster and different from what we have seen five years ago,” he said.
“I can’t wait to see what it will be in 10 years or five years.”
At the moment, however, it seems that it is Duopol between Alcaz and Sinner and McEnroe to keep the formula until they do not get into the game in their respective career as a big discouraging means.
