Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) capping works have picked up pace and construction is now underway on 104 roads spanning 145.68 km, taken up in 14 project packages at a cost of ₹ 1,487 crore.
Tendering for 14 more roads is currently underway, adding another 16.1 km to the network, B-SMILE Chief Engineer Raghavendra Prasad said on Wednesday.
Overall, this plan to cover 161.78 km across 16 packages with an estimated project cost of ₹1,700 crore, including ₹800 crore from state government grants and ₹900 crore from earmarked funds, he said.
Between 2016 and 2023, white lining work was completed on 47 roads with a length of 124.17 km. In the current phase (2023-24), work has started on 104 roads and the authority was preparing a proposal to cover 488 km of roads between 2025 and 2028, one of the biggest concrete road upgrading plans for Bengaluru, Mr. Prasad said.
Contractors have been instructed to ensure all mandatory site safety measures such as barricades, warning tapes and protective devices, especially when laying potable water pipes, storm drains, underground cables and pipes in white lining zones.
According to the GBA, the main reasons for the delay include slow approvals from the traffic police department and pending or delayed transfers of utilities by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, especially drinking water pipelines and UGDs.
Mr. Prasad said coordination with these agencies has improved and efforts have been made to remove bottlenecks quickly.
