The opposition BJP on Wednesday alleged that rampant corruption in getting allowances was the main reason why police personnel themselves have been involved in serious crimes in recent times, raising distrust in the police force and wondering which Indra (king of gods) is running the racket.
Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok, who participated in a debate in the legislature on the alleged deterioration of the law and order situation in the state, unequivocally identified the collusion of police with criminals as the main reason.
He said that the police themselves are supporting the illegal network of drug peddlers in Bengaluru, especially around schools and colleges. He claimed that whatever drug seizures were taking place in Bengaluru were only about 5% of the total volume of drugs coming into the state.
Noticing that the police were involved in various crimes, Mr. Ashok wondered how a terror suspect in the Central Jail at Parappana Agrahara could use mobile phones. In the last 11 months alone, about 130 policemen in 11 sub-divisions of Bengaluru have been suspended for their involvement in crimes, he said.
BJP member V. Sunil Kumar claimed that a police inspector generally had to pay ₹20-25 million as bribe for good publicity, while the ACP had to pay around ₹75 million and a superintendent of police would have to pay ₹2-3 million for good publicity.
Asserting that Home Minister G. Parameshwara was not the type of person to indulge in corruption, he asked, “Which Indra (king of gods) is leading such defection in the police department?
He said the state witnessed 10,510 cases of rape in the last two-and-a-half years, while 2,430 boys and 6,186 girls went missing during the same period.
