
New Delhi: Government orders for wheat for the marketing season 2025-26 (April June) exceeded 29.7 million tonnes (Mt) according to official data since 22 May. It is expected that brisk purchases in the middle of the bumper harvest will ensure sufficient supplies for distribution through the public distribution system (PDS) and will allow market intervention to reduce price tips.
The contracts cost 26.6 MTs in 2024–25, 26.2 MT in 2023–24 and only 18.8 MT in 2022–23.
Data from India Food Corp. In India (FCI), they show that the awarding of wheat orders increased this year 13.5% since the same period last year, while purchases are approaching completion in most of the main production states.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, wheat production is reflected in a record 115.43 MT for the 2024-25 season, which is 2% of 113.29 MT last year. The increase is largely caused by favorable weather and the absence of large damage to crops during natural breeding.
Pandjab leads with 11.9 MT acquired government agencies, according to a higher official in the state department of food, civil needs and consumer matters. Private merchants in Pandjab bought another 1.0 MT of the total number of arrivals in the state of approximately 13 Mt.
Madhya Pradesh and Haryan follow 7.77 MT and 7.14 MT. Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh recorded public procurement of 1.83 MT and 1.0 MT.
This year, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have seen a significant leap driven by incentives at the state level level. Madhya Pradesh offered a bonus £175 for Quinttal above the minimum support price (MSP) £2 425 while Rajasthan announced and £150 bonus. Last year Madhya Pradesh won 4.8 MT and Rajasthan 1.2 Mt.

The Central Government predicted a strong harvest and sets the order of 31.2 MT contracts for this season, including 12.4 Mt’s goals from Panjab, 7.5 Mt from Haryana, 6 Mt from Madhya Pradesh, 3 Mt from Uttar Pradesh and 2 Mt from Radjasthan. However, the Minister of Food and Consumers of Pralhad Joshi has recently stated that real contracts can affect 32-32.5 Mt.
Higher public procurement is expected to support key social security systems and strengthen the buffer stock to stabilize market prices.
