
In his first Sunday news of the crowds on the Square of St. Peter in the Vatican town of Pope Leo XIV appealed to the world of “no further war”.
He called for “authentic and lasting peace” in Ukraine, a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all Israeli hostages held by a militant group Hamas.
The new Pope, elected on May 8, also welcomed the recent fragile ceasefire between India and Pakistan and said he prayed to God to give the world a “miracle of peace”.

Leo further noted that he was glad that he had heard of the recent Indian Pakistani ceasefire and hoped that the negotiations would lead to a permanent agreement between the neighbors of armed nuclear weapons.
“But there are so many other conflicts in the world,” he added.
Mother’s Day
Pope Leo XIV also noted that Sunday was a mother’s day in many countries and wished all mothers “including those in heaven” a happy mother’s day.
On Sunday he also celebrated a private mass near the tomb of St. Peter and prayed at the tomb of several past popes in the caves under the basilica.
