For India’s regional satellite navigation, the big news at the end of October 2026 was that NavIC – short for “Navigation with Indian Constellation” – was back in the reckoning with the successful addition of the NVS-03 satellite. NVS-03 is the third in a series of five next-generation satellites designed to boost NavIC – the operational name for the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) – thereby enhancing the country’s satellite navigation capabilities.
According to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), the navigational payload on the NVS-03 operates in the L1, L5 and S bands with coverage over India and an area exceeding 1,500 km beyond its borders. The satellite is equipped with indigenous atomic clocks along with imported ones. Unsurprisingly, this development has reignited the ‘GPS vs NavIC’ debate and why India should maintain and strengthen its own navigation system in these times of geopolitical tension.
