The protesters claimed that paramilitary personnel formed an outer security cordon while another group of officers surrounded Wangchuk’s mattress. They claimed that large white sheets were raised to block the crowd’s view before Wangchuk was lifted and taken to a waiting ambulance.

Several protesters said they first reached for their cellphones to record the incident, only to find their view completely obscured by sheets.

Police claimed the transfer was for medical reasons only. In a statement, authorities said Sonam Wangchuk showed signs of dehydration due to prolonged starvation and was admitted for further medical evaluation.

The hospital also said blood tests showed compensated acidosis and low serum potassium. Doctors recommended intravenous fluids, but the hospital said Wangchuk refused intravenous treatment, oral rehydration fluids and medication, adding that he is being constantly monitored and consulted for his health.

Sonam Wangchuk’s hospitalization quickly became the center of a new controversy after Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, questioned the treatment process. In letters to the chief medical officer, she requested that no oral or intravenous treatment be administered without the consent of the family and doctors who monitored Wangchuk during the fast.

She also requested his release so he could be transferred to a medical facility of the family’s choice.

Angmo further alleged that Safdarjung Hospital refused to share copies of Wangchuk’s medical reports despite repeated requests. She claimed Wangchuk was “absolutely fine” and later disputed the hospital’s potassium findings, saying the reported value differed from earlier test results.

Alleging “lack of transparency”, she said the family had lost faith in the hospital and wanted him released immediately, according to PTI.

“Safdarjung hospital report says @Wangchuk66’s potassium level is 2.9, while just yesterday it was 4.3. They won’t let me get a second opinion by taking him to another lab, nor give me his blood sample in my presence to get tested. I waited for 3 hours but they didn’t immediately ask us to be discharged and so far they haven’t informed us that we can go to the hospital, which suits us.We have been waiting for their reply for the last 2 hours,” she said.

He also claimed the hospital did not share Wangchuk’s medical records with him and said he would conduct another blood test and release the results.
