What does $17.1 billion mean for Meta?
The headline figure for Meta on Wednesday was $17.1 billion in fines.
That was the amount the Silicon Valley giant agreed to pay as part of a settlement with 47 states, the District of Columbia and US territories over claims it put children at risk with addictive social media platforms.
Meta will initially pay about $12 billion. It could pay up to $5.1 billion if TikTok, YouTube and Snap, the owner of Snapchat, also settle with the states and agree to financial penalties and product changes.
This amount is a large amount for many states. But how big of a problem is this for Meta? Here are some numbers for context.
$1.45 trillion
The entire value of Meta’s stock is $1.45 trillion. The $17.1 billion penalty is about 1 percent of that.
200 billion dollars
The four states that brought the social media addiction lawsuit against Meta in the case, which was being tried in the U.S. Northern District of California in Oakland, initially sought about $200 billion in fines.
$60.8 billion
Meta’s revenue in the last quarter was $60.8 billion. Last year, the company reported total revenue of $200.97 billion.
$15.85 billion
Meta’s profit for the second quarter of this year was $15.85 billion. For the whole of last year, the profit was 60.46 billion dollars.
2 billion dollars
That’s the amount Meta said it spent in the second quarter to deal with legal issues.
