Premier League Gameweek 28 concludes with West Ham hosting Newcastle at the London Stadium on Monday night.
This season has seen West Ham become regulars on Monday Night Football, with the two sides clashing on a Monday back in November. That match at St James’ Park saw Aaron Wan-Bissaka shine in a surprise 2-0 victory for the Hammers, one of the few highlights of Julen Lopetegui’s short-lived tenure.
It’s been a challenging campaign for West Ham, but they enter this fixture on the back of two consecutive wins. After upsetting Arsenal at the Emirates, they comfortably defeated Leicester 2-0. Despite this recent upturn in form, Graham Potter’s side remains in 16th place going into Monday’s clash.
Newcastle, on the other hand, ended 2023 in strong form but have struggled in the new year. Eddie Howe’s team has lost three of their last four Premier League matches and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton last weekend. Their poor run leaves them in eighth place ahead of next Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.
Here’s 90min’s guide to the latest edition of Monday Night Football.

Team News
West Ham:
Lucas Paqueta could make a return from an ankle injury despite looming spot-fixing charges that may result in a lengthy ban. However, long-term absentees Michail Antonio and Niclas Fullkrug remain sidelined. Vladimir Coufal is expected to return to Potter’s squad, and the manager is likely to stick with the 3-5-2 formation that has brought recent success.
Predicted West Ham XI (3-5-2):
Areola; Todibo, Kilman, Cresswell; Wan-Bissaka, Soucek, Alvarez, Ward-Prowse, Scarles; Kudus, Bowen.
Newcastle:
The Magpies will be without the suspended Anthony Gordon, who was sent off in their FA Cup defeat to Brighton. Lewis Hall is out for the season, while Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are long-term absentees. Kieran Trippier is expected to recover from a minor back issue, and Alexander Isak is fit after recent fatigue concerns.
Predicted Newcastle XI (4-3-3):
Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Murphy, Isak, Barnes.
Prediction
West Ham are well-rested and in decent form heading into Monday’s clash. Potter seems to have found a system that works without a traditional number nine, and Paqueta’s return, even if he doesn’t start, is a significant boost.
Newcastle, however, have struggled with fatigue and absences. While Isak’s availability is a positive, their recent performances suggest they may face difficulties in east London. A moment of brilliance from their star striker could be enough to salvage a point.
Prediction: West Ham 1-1 Newcastle
