The main minister of West Bengal Mamata Baerjee said on Thursday (September 18, 2025) that the state government has released 840 prisoners since 2011, who serve lifelong therms, all of whom have served more than 14 years of their sentences.
Mrs. Banerjee added in the social media that 45 prisoners are now released after a proper legal process. “I expand them and all members of their families congratulations
She stressed that the work of the remedial system was to change the thinking of criminals and bring them back to the mainstream of the company, Mrs. Banerjee expressed the hope that liberated prisoners would become good citizens.
The prisons in West Bengal are fighting with a high occupancy inside the axle houses, including the prisoners “Jankhalash” (those who remain in prison even after the completion of their conditions).
Prison statistics in India-2022 state that the prison in West Bengal has a total capacity of 19 556 men and 1,920 women. Since December 21, 2021, however, the state has accommodated 26,994 men and 1,778 women and 17 transgender, which is 1.3 times higher than their capacity.
Activist RTI Sair Ahamed received data on a constant increase in the total number of prisoners, out of 23,810 in January 2019 to 28,789 in January 2022. In the case of “jankhalash” prisoner is in prison in prison in 2012 (358 men).
