Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, in his third consecutive appearance in the last three days, was on Tuesday (June 16, 2026) questioned by the West Bengal Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with alleged inflammatory statements he made during the election campaign.
Mr Banerjee was earlier questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for 11 hours on Monday over the alleged school job scam and about eight hours by the CID on Sunday (June 14, 2026) in connection with the legislators’ signature forgery case, three days after it questioned him for more than five hours on June 11.
The Diamond Harbor MP was on Tuesday questioned in connection with a First Information Report (FIR) lodged at the Bidhannagar police station by an individual Rajib Sarkar on May 15 for allegedly making provocative remarks in some speeches posted on social media.
Mr. Banerjee arrived at the West Bengal Police Headquarters, Bhabani Bhawan, at 11:57 a.m. and left at about 6:30 p.m. after questioning.
Mr Banerjee made his first appearance before the CID on Thursday (June 11, 2026) after the Calcutta High Court earlier in the day ordered the Trinamool leader to appear before the agency in connection with the West Bengal Assembly signature scandal probe by 6pm the same day. The court also granted Mr. Banerjee a three-week interim protection and ordered that the CID cannot take any coercive action if he cooperates with the investigation.
Meanwhile, Maidul Islam, a TMC teacher union leader and a close aide of Mr. Banerjee, was also arrested by the Hatuagan police in South 24 Parganas in connection with the case of aiding and abetting the suicide of Debabrata Bhattacharya, the then deputy chief of Bolsiddhi Kalinagar Gram Panchayat in South 2202.
Meanwhile, an official team from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation arrived at Mr. Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat on Tuesday afternoon to take measurements as part of an inspection to verify that the property complies with the approved building regulations.
