
A day after Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer reported the highest maximum temperature of 44.4°C, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for May 3 for coastal Andhra Pradesh. The Met Office has predicted hail over Jammu and Kashmir and thunderstorm over Chhattisgarh and has issued an orange alert for these areas.
While parts of southern peninsular India brace for hot and humid weather today, including Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura may expect isolated heavy rainfall till May 4.
The IMD predicts a drop in the maximum temperature
The IMD in its latest weather bulletin has predicted a 2-3°C gradual drop in maximum temperatures over northwest India till May 5 and no significant change thereafter. A Western Disturbance is expected to bring showers and hence a change in mercury to the region in the coming days.
“Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate showers with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (speeds reaching 30-50 km/h) likely over Punjab during 3-6 June; Haryana, Chandigarh during 3-6; isolated to scattered light to moderate showers with thunderstorms, lightning and gusts likely reaching 0 km/h – excessive wind 3 km/h 0 3-8 May; East Uttar Pradesh on 4-7 May,” an IMD press release said.
Weather Forecast for East India
The IMD has warned of moderate to widespread rainfall over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Northeast India this week. Apart from this, isolated to scattered thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds (40-60 kmph) and hailstorm are likely over the western Himalayan region, northwest plains and adjoining central India till May 6.
The IMD added: “Thundersquall (wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph) likely over West Bengal and Sikkim, Odisha on May 4 and 5; Jharkhand on May 4 and Bihar on May 4 and 6.”
The Meteorological Department indicated the possibility of isolated hailstorm in Jharkhand and Bihar on 4 May and said: “Isolated heavy rainfall likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim” by 4 May and in Bihar on 4 May.
Weather Forecast for Central India
Moving to the weather forecast for central India, the IMD has predicted isolated light to moderate rainfall with thundershowers, lightning and gusty winds for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh till May 7 and Vidarbha region of Maharashtra till May 6.
Warning to fishermen
The IMD further advised fishermen not to venture into Odisha, West Bengal, Bangladesh and across some parts of North West and North East Bay of Bengal on May 3 and 4.
