
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for northeast India and warned of heavy rainfall in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh till March 17. Prevailing whether the conditions over the western Himalayan region are the result of a western disturbance that caused a devastating gale in Odisha on March 15 and heavy rains in the northeastern states.
In a post on X, the IMD said: “Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Northeast India…Residents are advised to remain alert and follow official weather updates.”
The Meteorological Office has warned of isolated thunderstorm activity and gusty winds over eastern and adjoining central India from March 16 to 19. The latest IMD weather bulletin states: “Scattered thunderstorm activity accompanied by gusty winds is also likely over East and adjoining central India during March 16-19 with maximum intensity on March 16, 2026.”
It further noted, “A fresh western disturbance is likely to cause rain/thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds along with hail likely over western Himalayan region and adjoining plains from March 18.”
Yellow alert in Assam and Mizoram
Yellow alert for heavy rains remains in effect for Assam.
Forecasting heavy rainfall, the meteorological department has also issued a yellow alert for Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.
Sunday’s devastating tornado left two people and more than 17 injured in Uda’s Mayurbhanj district. More than 100 houses were damaged after the gale hit several villages near Karanjia along National Highway (NH)-220.
