We will not transfer the case from Delhi HC as things have moved: Collapse of SC building on Satya Niketan

The Supreme Court on Thursday (September 10, 2026) said it was not transferring the Satya Niketan building collapse case pending before the Delhi High Court as “things have moved”.

A bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and R Mahdevan said it did not want to disturb the existing situation and the apex court would continue to monitor compliance with its directions in a short interval.

A five-storey building housing boys’ paying guest (PG) accommodation at Satya Niketan, near Delhi University’s South Campus, collapsed on Sunday (September 6) at around 1.30 pm, leaving seven dead and 12 injured.

Senior advocate Ajit Sinha, who was appointed as amicus curiae in the matter, said he has come to know from his sources and media reports that the civic authorities have started cracking down on unauthorized constructions and PG hostels and anything above four floors is being demolished.

Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), also urged the Bench not to refer the case to the high court as the civic bodies were acting more purposefully.

Accepting the amicus curiae and SG’s submission, the Bench said it was not transferring the case and that its earlier directions against unauthorized construction would be followed.

On September 8, the apex court said it could transfer the case if necessary.

The owner of the building, his wife and son have been arrested while five MCD officials have been suspended in connection with the collapse on Sunday (September 6).
