‘We didn’t keep Sachin Tendulkar waiting’: Demands grow for early call-up of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to India | Cricket News – The Tech Word News

Sachin Tendulkar abd Vaibhav Suryavanshi (Image credit: Agencies) India’s 2026 Under-19 World Cup triumph had many heroes, but one name rose above the rest – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. In the final against England in Harare, the 14-year-old prodigy produced a breathtaking performance that stunned the cricketing world. Sooryavanshi smashed 175 off just 80 balls to lead India to their sixth U19 World Cup title and rewrite the record books, including registering the highest individual score in the U19 World Cup final. The sheer boldness of his stroke play, combined with a growing list of centuries at age group level, has sparked a familiar debate in Indian cricket circles: should generational talent be fast-tracked?

Among those who have expressed strong support for the idea is Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who has drawn a direct parallel between Suryavanshi and one of the biggest icons of the game — Sachin Tendulkar.“Vaibhav Sooryavanshi deserves to be elevated to higher honors urgently. Last time we had a 14-year-old genius at the wicket, his name was Sachin Tendulkar. And we didn’t keep him waiting,” Tharoor wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The comparison is not without historical weight. After racking up runs in school and domestic cricket, Tendulkar was inducted into the Indian team in 1989 at the age of just 16 when he made his international debut against Pakistan. His rapid rise went on to redefine Indian cricket for over two decades.Yet, unlike the Tendulkar era, Sooryavanshi faces an insurmountable hurdle. Despite the buzz around him, the Bihar-born left-hander cannot represent India at a senior international level until March 2026. The hurdle lies in the ICC’s minimum age policy, which was introduced in 2020 to protect the physical and mental well-being of young cricketers. According to the regulation, players must be above 15 years of age to play in international cricket.Born on 27 March 2011, Sooryavanshi was technically still 14 at the time of India’s World Cup triumph in February 2026. As a result, no matter how many stunning 36-ball centuries he amasses for Bihar or how many established IPL bowlers he dismantles for Rajasthan Royals, the national selectors have no choice but to wait. For now, even as influential voices like Tharoor echo Sachin’s precedent, Sooryavanshi’s Indian dream remains on hold – at least until the calendar turns to March 27, 2026.
