Several trade unions and associations of employees of the West Bengal Government on Friday (May 16, 2025) welcomed the order of the Supreme Court, which ordered the state to pay 25% of the waiting arrears for dear (DA) to employees.
In May 2022, the West Bengal government attacked an order for the Supreme Court in Calcutta, which controlled the DA payment and stated that DA was not a right. The matter is now heard at the Supreme Court.

“The Supreme Court’s order has acknowledged our request that DA is a legally enforceable law. We will protest for almost 918 days,” Hindi leader Sangrami Joutho Manch, a team of State Government trade unions, told Hinda.
Mr. Ghosh said he would benefit about 12 employees and pensioners. The Association of State Government employees urged Mamata Baerjee not to review the order and spend the money of taxpayers. Sangrami Joutho Manch organized several protests requiring DA at the same level as the employees of the central government.
Payment for three months
Justices Sanjay Karol and Sandeep Mehta issued an interim order that directed West Bengal to make a payment within three months and publish a matter that will be heard next in August. The government of West Bengal pays about 18% of wages as DA, while employees of the central government receive more than 55%.
The head of the lawyer and leader of CPI (m) Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya said that the state government’s argument that DA would be of a state treasury has no legal basis. Mr. Bhattacharya said that the government of West Bengal has money for “illegal works, including building temples and organizing trade fairs, but cannot pay employees of the state government their salaries”.
“The court originally ordered a payment of 50% of DA arrears. According to trade unions, 25% of the arrears will cost 10,000 crore.
The leaders of the opposition parties welcomed the order and criticized Mamata Banerjee. The leader of the opposition of Suvenda Adhikari demanded her resignation.
“I hope that Mamata Banerjee will take responsibility for the rejection of employees’ rights for years and the offer of her resignation,” said BJP leader.
Adhikari described development as a huge victory for the employees of the West Bengal Government and stated that the government of chief ministers Banerjee spent about 200 crore to fight against its own employees. “Mamata Banerjee claimed that” DA is not a right. “Today’s direction shows that DA is really a right,” Lop said.
